Randall Jones, Owner, Ursus Operations TrustedTech
Our founder Randy has always loved computers. He started writing his own programs in elementary school. He built multiple computers on the floor in his room before he graduated high school.
Randy went to Carnegie Mellon University. His first job there was teaching Java programming as a Course Assistant for the intermediate programming class.
Randy liked Physics too, but ultimately he majored in Economics in the Tepper School of Business. He loved to work as a Teaching Assistant for the introductory economics course. He also loved statistical analysis and modeling. He was fortunate enough to even get to publish a paper with his professor using economic regression analysis on the Gold Rush!
After he graduated, Randy moved down to Washington, DC to work for the Department of Justice. Randy was a contractor helping implement their IT systems for several years. He then worked directly for the DOJ, ultimately taking a senior position in procurement responsible for $700M+ per year. He bought a lot of IT systems along the way and loved to use technology to automate processes wherever he could.
Our cool Bear Mascot
Randy had a saying he liked: "Do the things that make sense when they make sense, and don't do the things that don't make sense when they don't make sense." He got a lot of mileage out of applying this principle.
The IT industry made sense to him at the large corporate level. He knew a lot of very smart and hardworking experts, and they did a lot of cutting edge things to keep us safe. This made sense.
But for small business and regular people -- things did not make sense. There was no way for most people to access high level IT knowledge at all. Unless you could spend tens of thousands of dollars on high end consulting fees, you were basically stuck with "did you try turning it off and back on?" and attempting to fix everything on your own.
It made sense to Randy to make a company that filled that gap -- a company that made 30+ years of IT experience at the highest levels accessible to everyone. Randy always liked bears, so he made a cool bear mascot, registered Ursus Operations LLC, and business has been increasing ever since.
